Vietnamese miracle begins to run out of fuel for Vietnam Airlines

The sale to foreign investors of between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of Vietnam Airlines has been on the cards this year, but it is now unlikely to happen before 2009. The expected delay to the privatisation of Vietnam Airlines comes as the lustre on the country's recent economic boom has begun to fade. One fund manager described the collapse in the stock market as a timely reminder of the meaning of risk in emerging markets.

Vietnam: coping with skyrocketing fuel prices

Vietnam's government, on Jul. 22, suddenly raised domestic fuel prices by 36 percent. In March the government had frozen fuel prices along with nine other "essential" commodities. And early July there was an official promise that prices of petrol and diesel would not be disturbed until the end of the year. Many believe that last week's fuel price increases will have a cascading effect on all goods in a matter of weeks.
